BEAR
Location: Parkland Humane Society Inc.
Sex: Female
Breed: Medium Mix
Colour: Tri-Colour
Age: Unknown - Older
Bear earned the nickname Mama Bear after arriving in our are care having clearly had puppies. Unfortunately, despite searching, her babies were nowhere to be found. And while we're sure she was a wonderful mama, Bear seems to have entered her "the kids are gone, this is my time" era. & honestly? she is enjoying the solitude. Bear is the perfect medium dog sized dog - not too big, not to small, just the right amount to Bear. What breed is she? We have absolutely not idea. She seems to be a careful crafted combination of dog, Bear, professional butt-wiggler and whatever else Mother Nature has left in the cupboard that day. Your guess is honestly as good as ours! She's basically a Limited Edition Parkland Special. Whatever went into making her, it resulted in one ridiculously happy girl whose tail spins in circles and whose entire back end wiggles with so much enthusiasm that we're fairly certain Bear is only a few RPM's away from becoming airborne. As far as we know, Bear spent more, if not all of her life outdoors. Dog houses? Expert Level. Comfortable shady spot? She'll locate the best one immediately. Indoor living? Well... that has been a whole new adventure. We recently started bringing Bear inside, she caught on surprisingly quickly. She's becoming more comfortable inside, although if Bear gets to vote, she's still choosing the great outdoors.
Collars and leashes also appear to be completely new to her. She may have gone her entire life without ever needing either, so we're working hard to teach her that they're simply part of everyday life. Outside walks are still scary and we're letting Bear learn at her own pace. Everyday she make it a little farther in her walk. Inside her pen, however, when left alone with a leash, Bear happily takes herself for walks. Round and round she goes apparently acting as both the dog and the dog walker. She already has recall to her name and absolutely loves praise. Want to win Bear over? use your sweetest baby voice and tell her she's a good girl! She will happily accept your compliments. ... and then there are the belly rubs. Bear could lie there all day while you scratch her tummy. As the belly rub continues, her little tongue starts making tiny bleps out of her mouth. The better the belly rub, the more ridiculous the face. Other dogs are another work in progress. Bear came to us making it very clear that she did not appreciate their existence. Growling, showing teeth - the whole "Please remove that dog from my planet" routine. But shelter life has already taught her something important: other dogs can exist without bothering her. She has progressed from reacting strongly to mostly just watching them. That is HUGE progress for this girl. At this point Bear would be happiest as the only dog in her home, where she can continue learning without feeling overwhelmed. Bear is incredibly grateful for everything she receives. A comfortable place to sleep, a shady spot. A kind voice. A belly rub. A little praise. Things many dogs take for granted seem genuinely special to her. She isn't coming to you knowing all the traditional "pet dog" rules. She's learning them. Bear needs someone willing to celebrate the little victories. In return you'll get one enormously grateful Mama Bear. Bear spent her old life surviving outside. Now she's learning what it means to be someone's dog. Maybe you could be the person who teaches her. If you are interested in Bear, please fill out a Dog Adoption Application.
